Credit Card Strategy
A credit card can work for you or against you. Used well, it pays you back with rewards, protects you from fraud, and builds your credit. Used badly, it charges you interest and pulls you into debt.
Roo’s job is to help you get the good parts and skip the bad ones, starting from wherever you are today.
Wherever you are is a fine place to start
Plenty of people carry a balance and pay interest. That is common, and it does not mean you are behind. Roo is built to help you work your way out of it, one day at a time.
The goal you are working toward is simple: pay each card in full every month. Once you get there, the card becomes a tool you control instead of a company you owe.
How Roo helps
In Roo, a credit card lives in Payback Mode. This means the transactions come in for you to swipe, but the balance does not affect your pouch balances. What you owe on a card is not cash you have, so Roo never counts it that way.
Payback Mode also helps you avoid going further into debt. Every time you swipe, Roo moves that much money into your Payback Pouch. By the time the statement shows up, the money to pay it is already waiting. That means:
- You never have to ask “how much should I pay?” The cash is set aside, so you can turn on autopay for the full statement balance and stop thinking about it.
- You avoid decision fatigue. Set it up once, and it keeps running on its own.
- You stop paying interest. When nothing carries over to the next month, the card costs you nothing to use.
Payback Mode is the right fit for almost everyone. If you always pay in full and keep a lot more cash than you owe, you can choose to put a card On Budget instead, which treats it more like a checking account that can go negative. Read What if I want my credit card to act like a checking account? before you make that switch.
If you are carrying a balance
There is a plan for that. Turn on the Debt Payback Plan and Roo will help you:
- Put your debts in the order you want to pay them off.
- Pick a strategy. Snowball goes after the smallest balance first for quick wins. Avalanche goes after the highest interest rate first to save you the most money.
- Pay those balances down over time with your Payback Pouch.
As each balance shrinks, more of your money moves to the next one. Keep at it and you reach the point where every card gets paid in full each month, and the credit card company stops collecting interest from you.
